Here's a quote about the annual June 23rd celebration in Spain:
"Sant Joan Festival Barcelona
Every June 24th the city of Barcelona celebrates the Sant Joan Festival on the summer solace. Traditionally, the Sant Joan Festival is celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. The Spanish consider Sant Joan's eve as the shortest night of the year since celebrations continue until dawn. Enormous bonfires are built on the beach and fire crackers exploded on the night of June 23rd. The patron saint's festival is also known as the nit del foc when old items are burnt in a purification ritual before the arrival of summer. According to tradition, the solace marks a change and the remains of winter are burnt on bonfires. Typical summer activities start following day, June 24th. Sant Juan or, in Catalan, Sant Joan, is the most important event in June and is celebrated by all Catalans. Beach or block parties abound. San Juan's eve is comparable to New Year's eve when ancient traditions are joined under the legend of fire. Customarily, party-goers eat the traditional San Juan cake and listen to ancient erbenas? folk songs. The best places to experience the Sant Joan festival are: the Rambla, the Barceloneta district and the Catalan beaches."
It sounds, from other descriptions, as though this celebration goes on from dusk 'til dawn, and that La Rambla, the street our hotel is on, is one of the best places to celebrate. So imagine being in a hotel in Times Square on New Year's Eve. YIKES. We might just be tired enough to sleep on the plane ride home tomorrow!
Well this will be an experience!
